Except for the Ensign, all of our accounts come with a shell account accesible via ssh. This allows you to interact with your site in a multitude of ways. If you need to change the permissions of a cgi file, change your password, create new directories, or just want to use programming tools such as C and Perl, you need to be able to connect to the shell of your virtual site, and that's the capability a shell account gives you.

In order to access your account via ssh, you must already be using an Internet access provider. Then, just use any of the many ssh terminal programs out there to communicate with your virtual host. Here is a brief list of some of the more popular free and inexpensive ssh programs:
